Wildlife Photography Workshop

My Wildlife Photography workshops are one of my favourite workshops to run. In my opinion there is nothing more rewarding than wildlife photography. It presents a whole slew of fresh challenges which you as a photographer have to overcome.

I have been photographing wildlife for the best part of 40 years and I am still learning.

What equipment will you need to participate in one of my Wildlife Photography workshops?

A decent DSLR and a long lens are the minimum you will need to capture anything decent.

Personally I think the camera body is less important than the lens. You will need something in the order of 300mm or longer. Personally I use a 100-400mm, with the 1.4 extender if I really need the reach. However this does have its drawbacks as I will explain on the day.

What will I Learn?

I will take you through:-

  • the various auto focus modes
  • we will look at AV vs TV
  • the benefits of BBF
  • framing the subject
  • capturing personality

Who is this Course for?

Photographers who are keen on starting wildlife photography, or those who want to learn more.

You will need a good grasp of the exposure triangle and how it all fits together. Plus a working knowledge of your camera’s settings.

Completing this course will help you:

  • build your confidence levels in your camera
  • build your confidence levels in your ability
  • help you to understand how to deal with motion
  • choosing the correct AF zone and AF point
  • help you to use aperture, speed and ISO to create great images

Who is the workshop for?

The course is aimed at photographers who are at an intermediate or advanced level, but are looking to improve their technique; or those who have not got to grips with wildlife photography.

It is also useful for those photographers who are not overly confident with using the creative zones on their camera. Maybe you need a refresher. Maybe you want a greater understanding of how to use depth of field in your images to make a subject ‘pop’ from the background using bokeh.

Proposed Learning Path

Section 1 – Know Your Camera

Understanding your camera functions, how to access and manipulate them in a hurry is sometimes the difference between a good shot and a great shot.

Section 2 – Understanding the AF zones

Your DSLR will have several AF zones, (for example my 7d mkii has 5), and choosing the correct one for a particular circumstance will improve the odds of a great image.

Section 3 – Choosing the correct AF point

Which is better for wildlife photography, single point or 5 point or 9 point? Once again it all depends upon the circumstances, and your understanding of what is required.

Section 4 – Understanding the relationship between aperture, speed & ISO

Sometimes known as the magic triangle, the relationship between these three elements is key to creative photography. Understanding how they work independently and as a team is once again vital to understanding how to capture a great image when the situation is not ideal.

Section 5 – Practical Application for depth of field

Practice makes perfect. That’s why you will always have ample time to put your new found theoretical knowledge to use in a nurturing environment; this together with advice, guidance and immediate feedback that will help you improve, is a winning combination.
