workshop Overview

Get Off Auto – Full Day Workshop

Participating in myGet Off Autophotography workshop will give you the skills to match your passion for photography.

Picking up your camera and exploring new photographic opportunities will always motivate and inspire you to grow as a photographer. Being able to manipulate your camera settings to shoot the images you can see in your minds eye, is a way better experience.

This workshop will give you the opportunity to take control of your camera in a learning environment. The way we grow and learn best is by trial and error. Making mistakes is the best way to learn. Having someone there to feed you the knowledge and guide you along the way,  is priceless.

This course will allow you to get off the auto setting on your DSLR and share a learning experience with other photographers at the same level as you and who share your passion for photography.

This course, as with all of my others, allows you to learn from an expert while developing your confidence.

As a fully qualified teacher with more than a decade of teaching experience under my belt , I am comfortable with communicating the knowledge and skills necessary to get you using the creative zones on your camera; but more importantly I will get the best out of you.

I will ensure that every single student gets the level of support they need and will be on hand to offer help as needed throughout my get off auto photography workshop.

I will help you master technical skills while providing ample time for you to explore your own style.

With expert guidance your creative insight becomes more acute allowing you to develop your own personal style throughout my photography courses.

Get off Auto Photography Workshop

Get off auto - Common Darter Dragonfly

Today’s digital cameras can confuse even advanced photographers. Knowing what function does what takes time to learn, and can be so confusing as you start out.

A photography workshop is the perfect opportunity to practice and develop your skills as a photographer. Under the supervision of a knowledgeable professional and with the support of peers you will develop the proficiency required to create striking images. Participating in this particular workshop is an opportunity to learn about the creative zones on your DSLR.

I will cover:

  • aperture value
  • time value
  • program

As a professional photographer I spend the majority of my time in Aperture Value mode and that is where we will focus our efforts during this workshop.

In a well run workshop you will be encouraged to create the composition ‘in camera’. This is the essence of photography.

During the get off auto workshop you will have ample time and opportunity to practice what you learn.

The workshop will run at the Ironworks, a location to the West of Shrewsbury.

This fabulous location enables you to learn technical skills and theory ‘in the field’ and put your training to use immediately. The more you practice your new skills, the longer they will stay with you.

The goal is to have the process of creating ‘photographs of which you are proud’ becomes second nature and will free you to pursue artistic vision.

Get instant constructive feedback on your images

As a teacher I understand that feedback and the opportunity to improve is vital in the learning process. Consequently you will receive feedback and pointers on how to improve throughout the day.

Feedback, not only from me but from your peers can provide rewarding insights into how others perceive your work and how you can improve your photography.

Workshop environments should never be a one way street. Interaction between individuals, the group and the instructor are all valuable learning experiences.

Make friends and have a lot of FUN!

Photography is an activity often seen as a solo pursuit, so the rewards gained from participating in a workshop are many.

There is the energy and dynamics created when you bring together a group of like minded individuals with a common goal. Plus there are the many opportunities to share knowledge and experience.

And last there is the camaraderie, through which new friendships can develop.

Completing this course will help you:

  • build your confidence levels in your camera
  • build your confidence levels in your ability
  • help you to understand the different creative zones
  • give you an understanding of the relationship between light and speed
  • help you to use aperture, speed and ISO to create great images

Who is the workshop for?

The ‘Get Off Auto’ workshop is aimed squarely at beginners, but is useful for those photographers who are not overly confident with using the creative zones on their camera. Maybe you need a refresher. Maybe you want a greater understanding of how to use depth of field in your images to make a subject ‘pop’.’Get Off Auto’ workshop

Proposed Learning Path

Section 1 – Know Your Camera

Understanding your camera functions, how to access and manipulate them in a hurry is sometimes the difference between a good shot and a great shot.

Section 2 – Understanding the Command Wheel

The command wheel varies from camera to camera, but no matter what the modes are called they all do the same job. Most experienced users stick with either manual or aperture value. These two modes give a photographer the most control over the final image.

Section 3 – Understanding the Relationship between Light & Speed

Photography literally means, drawing with light. Understanding the relationship between light and speed is vital when working as a photographer. Having full control over these two elements allows you to create images with flair and style.

Section 4 – Exploring the relationship between aperture, speed & ISO

Sometimes known as the magic triangle, the relationship between these three elements is key to creative photography. Understanding how they work independently and as a team is once again vital to understanding how to capture a great image when the situation is not ideal.

Section 5 – Practical Application for depth of field

Practice makes perfect. That’s why you will always have ample time to put your new found theoretical knowledge to use in a nurturing environment; this together with advice, guidance and immediate feedback that will help you improve, is a winning combination.
