workshop Overview

Editing with Lightroom – Full Day Workshop

Participating in my ‘Editing with Lightroom’ photography workshop will give you the skills to edit and produce fantastic images.

Picking up your camera and exploring new photographic opportunities will always motivate and inspire you to grow as a photographer.

However, it doesn’t always go to plan! In this age of digital, we tend to take far more images than necessary. Couple that with burst and it is quite possible to take multiple bad  images.

I am not ashamed to admit that I used to delete hundreds of images from Lightroom. Not just because they were identical to 20 others, but simply because they were just not good enough.

Editing with lightroom is great for rescuing images that are poorly exposed, have the wrong light balance, or need cropping. But there are limits to what can be achieved.

The image below is more or less a write off; understanding which images are not worth wasting your time on is a very useful skill.

learn to edit with lightroom

This ‘Editing with Lightroom‘ photography linked workshop will give you the opportunity to watch me work on some of your images in a non-destructive way.

Once you are feeling confident I will observe and advise as you try editing images for yourself.

The way we grow and learn best is by trial and error; making mistakes is the best way to learn. Having someone there to feed you the knowledge and guide you along the way, is priceless.

This course will allow you to get the best from your images. As with all of my other workshops, it allows you to learn from an expert while developing your confidence.

As a fully qualified teacher with more than a decade of teaching experience under my belt , I am comfortable with communicating the knowledge and skills necessary to get you using the creative zones on your camera; but more importantly I will get the best out of you.

I will ensure that every single student gets the level of support they need and will be on hand to offer help as needed.

I will help you master technical skills while providing ample time for you to explore your own style.

With expert guidance your creative insight becomes more acute allowing you to develop your own personal style throughout my photography courses.

Learn to edit with Lightroom – Photography Workshop

Today’s digital cameras can confuse even advanced photographers. Knowing what function does what takes time to learn, and can be so confusing as you start out.

A photography workshop is the perfect opportunity to practice and develop your skills as a photographer. Under the supervision of a knowledgeable professional and with the support of peers you will develop the proficiency required to create striking images. Participating in this particular workshop is an opportunity to learn about the creative zones on your DSLR.

I will cover:

  • aperture value
  • time value
  • program

As a professional photographer I spend the majority of my time in Aperture Value mode and that is where we will focus our efforts during this workshop.

In a well run workshop you will be encouraged to create the composition ‘in camera’. This is the essence of photography.

During the workshop you will be given ample time and opportunity to practice what you learn.

The workshop will run at the Ironworks, a location to the West of Shrewsbury.

This fabulous location enables you to learn technical skills and theory ‘in the field’ and put your training to use immediately. The more you practice your new skills, the longer they will stay with you.

The goal is to have the process of creating ‘photographs of which you are proud’ becomes second nature and will free you to pursue artistic vision.

Get instant constructive feedback on your images

As a teacher I understand that feedback and the opportunity to improve is vital in the learning process. Consequently you will receive feedback and pointers on how to improve throughout the day.

Feedback, not only from me but from your peers can provide rewarding insights into how others perceive your work and how you can improve your photography.

Workshop environments should never be a one way street. Interaction between individuals, the group and the instructor are all valuable learning experiences.

Improve your skills and have a lot of FUN!

Photography is an activity often seen as a solo pursuit, so the rewards gained from participating in a workshop are many.

First, there is the energy and dynamics created when you bring together a group of like minded individuals with a common goal.

Second there are the many opportunities to share knowledge and experience.

And last there is the camaraderie, through which new friendships can develop.

Completing this course will help you:

  • build your confidence levels in your camera
  • build your confidence levels in your ability
  • help you to understand the different creative zones
  • give you an understanding of the relationship between light and speed
  • help you to use aperture, speed and ISO to create great images

Who is the Editing with Lightroom workshop for?

The course is aimed squarely at beginners, but is useful for those photographers who are not overly confident with using the creative zones on their camera. Maybe you need a refresher. Maybe you want a greater understanding of how to use depth of field in your images to make a subject ‘pop’. Here is a link to the Adobe site where you can check out Lightroom.

Proposed Learning Path

Section 1 – The Lightroom Interface explained

This first section of the Editing with Lightroom workshop looks at the interface. Whether you are using Lightroom or Lightroom Classic the interface is very similar. The classic version gives you a little more flexibility and is the version I prefer to use.

Section 2 – Importing Images from various sources

The second section will look at importing images into Lightroom. Whether it is from directly from your camera, off a card via a card reader, or from your computer’s hard drive, people often struggle getting images into Lightroom.

Section 3 – creating folders and collections

A lot of wasted time and confusion can be avoided if you know how to import images correctly into the program via the import screen. Setting up folders, collections and using key words and phrases help to keep you images filed correctly. Finding 1 image in 20 is easy enough, but finding 1 amongst thousands is a whole different ball game!

Section 4 – non-destructive editing in the develop module

The beauty of editing with Lightroom is that your editing is non-destructive; your original image is not altered at all. You will learn how to create multiple version of a single image and apply different creative solutions to each. Working with RAW files allows you to change everything from the exposure to white balance.

Section 4 – learn to use the selective editing tools

Inside Lightroom there is a set of tools which give you a huge amount of control when it comes to editing your images. You will learn to use the crop tool, the red eye tool, healing tool and the brush tool. These tools allow you to alter specific areas of your image to create the effect you are looking for.

Section 5 – exporting images in various formats

Once you have finished editing you need to be able to export your images. How you export them depends entirely on whether you are wanting to print them, or use them on social media or your website. Do you need to watermark them? Do they need to be a specific DPi? Do they need to be a specific size?
