workshop Overview
Birds in Flight – 2 Day Workshop
Participating in my ‘Birds in Flight‘ 2 day photography workshop will give you the skills to match your passion for wildlife photography.
Picking up your camera and exploring new photographic opportunities will always motivate and inspire you to grow as a photographer. Being able to manipulate your camera settings to shoot the images you can see in your minds eye, is a way better experience.
This workshop will give you the opportunity to take control of your camera in a learning environment. The way we grow and learn best is by trial and error. Making mistakes is the best way to learn. Having someone there to feed you the knowledge and guide you along the way, is priceless.
This course will allow you to get off the auto setting on your DSLR and share a learning experience with other photographers at the same level as you and who share your passion for photography.
This course, as with all of my others, allows you to learn from an expert while developing your confidence.
As a fully qualified teacher with more than a decade of teaching experience under my belt , I am comfortable with communicating the knowledge and skills necessary to get you using the creative zones on your camera; but more importantly I will get the best out of you.
I will ensure that every single student gets the level of support they need and will be on hand to offer help as needed.
I will help you master technical skills while providing ample time for you to explore your own style.
With expert guidance your creative insight becomes more acute allowing you to develop your own personal style throughout my photography courses.
Birds in Flight Photography Workshop
Today’s digital cameras can confuse even advanced photographers. Knowing what function does what takes time to learn, and can be so confusing as you start out.
A photography workshop is the perfect opportunity to practice and develop your skills as a photographer. Under the supervision of a knowledgeable professional and with the support of peers you will develop the proficiency required to create striking images. Participating in this particular workshop is an opportunity to learn about the creative zones on your DSLR.
I will cover:
- aperture value
- time value
- program
As a professional photographer I spend the majority of my time in Aperture Value mode and that is where we will focus our efforts during this workshop.
In a well run workshop you will be encouraged to create the composition ‘in camera’. This is the essence of photography.
During the workshop you will be given ample time and opportunity to practice what you learn.
The workshop will run at the Ironworks, a location to the West of Shrewsbury.
This fabulous location enables you to learn technical skills and theory ‘in the field’ and put your training to use immediately. The more you practice your new skills, the longer they will stay with you.
The goal is to have the process of creating ‘photographs of which you are proud’ becomes second nature and will free you to pursue artistic vision.
Get instant constructive feedback on your images
As a teacher I understand that feedback and the opportunity to improve is vital in the learning process. Consequently you will receive feedback and pointers on how to improve throughout the birds in flight workshop.
Feedback, not only from me but from your peers can provide rewarding insights into how others perceive your work and how you can improve your photography.
Workshop environments should never be a one way street. Interaction between individuals, the group and the instructor are all valuable learning experiences.
Make friends and have a lot of FUN!
Photography is an activity often seen as a solo pursuit, so the rewards gained from participating in a workshop are many. There is the energy and dynamics created when you bring together a group of like minded individuals with a common goal.
Plus, there are the many opportunities to share knowledge and experience.
And last there is the camaraderie, through which new friendships can develop.
Completing this course will help you:
- build your confidence levels in your camera
- build your confidence levels in your ability
- help you to understand the different creative zones
- give you an understanding of the relationship between light and speed
- help you to use aperture, speed and ISO to create great images
Who is the birds in flight workshop for?
The course is aimed squarely at beginners, but is useful for those photographers who are not overly confident with using the creative zones on their camera. Maybe you need a refresher. Maybe you want a greater understanding of how to use depth of field in your images to make a subject ‘pop’.
Proposed Learning Path
Without a doubt you will shoot better wildlife images if you have at least a basic understanding of your subject matter. I don’t mean you have to be a specialist, but it will be beneficial to have some knowledge. If it’s birds, it helps to know their habitat, their feeding habits etc.
Section 2 – the difference between hide shoots and free range
There are a couple of differences when shooting from a hide and walking the countryside. The most obvious is clothing, but there is other gear to consider.
Section 3 – the Relationship between you and a moving object
There is a world of difference between capturing an image of a still and a moving subject. There is also a world of difference between capturing a large moving object, such as a car, to a very rapid raptor.
Section 4 – understanding the essential relationship between aperture, speed & ISO
Once again there is a massive difference in the settings required to capture a still object compared to one which is moving very fast and erratically. Fast shutter speed is king here unless you are going for a particular type of image.
Section 5 – using depth-of-field to make your subject pop
It is very easy to lose your subject in the backgound. The busier the background, and the more similarity between the colours in your subject and the background, requires you to create separation. This separation is known as bokah, or image blur created by your depth of field.
